Who’s Behind This? The Canasta League of America® (CLA)
Modern Canasta is officially supported by the Canasta League of America® (CLA) — the only national Canasta league in the U.S.
Founded in 2013 by Sue and Alan Silberstein, the CLA was created to bring Canasta lovers together and offer the same sense of community found in other recreational games like Bridge or Mahjong, or golf.
With help from experienced players and instructors, the CLA published the official rulebook:
“Standard Rules & Instructions for Playing Modern Canasta” (now in its 11th edition).
They also certify teachers, host tournaments, and connect players around the country through retreats, newsletters, and online games.
For over 10 years, the CLA has kept Modern Canasta alive and thriving.
How Does Modern Canasta Work?
Modern Canasta is played with four players in teams of two (other variations exist for more advanced players), making it the perfect game for couples or friends looking for a fun, social activity. Your team’s goal? Be the first to score 8,500 points by creating melds — sets of cards of the same number — and building powerful canastas, which are melds of seven cards.
You’ll play with a big, exciting deck: two full decks plus jokers (that’s 108 cards in total!). Jokers and twos are your wild cards — they can help complete melds, but come with a few clever rules. Red threes are special: they earn your team surprise bonus points. Black threes, on the other hand, are your best defense — blocking your opponents from making big plays.
It’s easy to learn, but every hand keeps you thinking — and smiling.

“When Covid hit, many of us joined Canasta Junction, like so many others, so we could continue playing games, and have social connection as we all stayed in our homes. Once we could play in person, four of us decided to keep playing every Sunday morning on CJ, and today we still have our game. We play at 10:00 when we are all in the same city. We are snowbirds , so six months year, we have different time zones and have worked out our starting time. When someone can’t play, we have an eager sub.
